It\u2019s all about the mix: pioneering logistics in a changing economic world<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

What do the following three dates have in \u00adcommon: 11 September 2001, 27 January 2020 and 24 February 2022? All three dates are asso\u00adciated with events that, to this day, have fundamentally changed the world as we knew it. They are the dates of the attack on the Twin Towers in New York, the first official Covid-19 case in \u00adGermany and the start of Russia\u2019s war of aggres\u00adsion against neighbouring Ukraine. This up\u00adheaval, now re\u00adferred to as a \u201cturning point in history\u201d, has also presented Main Franconia with new challenges. <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

With a population of almost one million (2021), an area of around 7,000 square kilometres and a purchasing power of 23.7 billion euros in 2022, the region is an important economic building block in the centre of Germany. Not only do the \u201cBig Three\u201d \u2013 ZF, SKF and Schaeffler \u2013 have globally important locations here, but also many other well-known employers such as Brose, Bosch-Rexroth, Preh, S\u00fcdzucker, Warema or Winora. Traffic and transport logistics play a significant role in the \u00adcontext of the outlined situation of dramatic changes, a role that is not infrequently underestimated by political and business decision-makers. It is important because, as the \u201clubricant\u201d of the manufacturing industry, professional logistics on land, at sea and in the air guarantees uninterrupted, affordable \u00adsupply chains and thus ultimately economic pros\u00adperity in the long term. <\/span><\/p>\n

In light of this, the question of the state of resilience of logistics in Main Franconia at this \u00adturning point in history, is all the more pertinent. The geo\u00adgraphical, transport and human resources conditions are particularly positive: <\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • Main Franconia\u2019s central location on the north-south axis to the German seaports, supported by its own combined transport terminal in Schweinfurt with international container and heavy goods transport with connections to the seaports of Hamburg, Bremen and the western ports;<\/li>\n
  • Successful logistics service companies such as the owner-\u00admanaged Geis, Pabst or Sch\u00e4flein freight forwarders, which are increasingly offering high-end contract logistics solutions for industry in addition to classic transport;<\/li>\n
  • The traditional inland waterway transport on the Main, with its \u00adsignificant potential to compensate for increasing road and rail bottlenecks during the climate transition (keywords: coal and heavy goods transport);<\/li>\n
  • Two large Main Franconian airfields in Giebelstadt and Ha\u00dffurt-Schweinfurt, through which regional companies have \u00addirect flight connections to their global business partners;<\/li>\n
  • An almost constantly low unemployment rate, which currently stands at around 2.6% for Main Franconia, which is only about half the German average;<\/li>\n
  • And last but not least the two university locations of W\u00fcrzburg and Schweinfurt, where the University of Applied \u00adSciences in Schweinfurt provides qualified young logistics managers with two specialised bachelor\u2019s degree programmes in German and English.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

    Looking ahead, Main Franconia is also developing more and more into a centre of excellence for services. Despite economic uncertainties, for example, the region has been characterised for years by an unrestrained start-up dynamic and associated net growth of around 7,000 companies in the last decade \u2013 above all in trade and commercial services. Freight forwarding companies<\/span>are investing more in the logistics site \u2013 for instance, the Geis Group has built a second \u00adlogistics centre in Gochsheim for 18 million euros and Sch\u00e4flein is \u00adplanning an industrial and service centre with 175 new jobs in Gerholzhofen. <\/span>In addition, the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030 provides for the capacity increase of rail freight between Fulda and Nuremberg by adding to the signal blocks between Burg\u00adsinn, Gem\u00fcnden, W\u00fcrzburg and Siegelsdorf and expanding it to three tracks between Siegelsdorf and F\u00fcrth.<\/span><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    The often neglected potential of inland waterway transport will (have to) play a more significant role in regional and supra-\u00adregional transport chains, as land-based road and rail service providers are \u00adincreasingly reaching their limits. This makes the planned investments according to the Federal Transport \u00adInfrastructure Plan to eliminate the bottlenecks due to the poor \u00adquality of an obsolete lock infrastructure on the Main Fran\u00adconian waterways all the more important.<\/p>\n

    Conclusion: The conditions for Main Franconia are good \u2013 but ultimately it will be important to use this turning point in his\u00adtory as an opportunity to adapt the mix and interaction of \u00admodes of transport to the current and future challenges.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
